We are preparing our retention rate for tab B and are considering the allowable exclusions. The following is the description for exclusions: "The initial cohort may be adjusted for students who departed for the following reasons: death, permanent disability, service in the armed forces, foreign aid service of the federal government or official church missions. No other adjustments to the initial cohort should be made."

Our university typically has a few international students each year that leave for mandatory military service and then return to complete their degree. Less often do we have a US citizen leave for service in the armed forces. We are evaluating whether to take the exclusion for voluntary military service or treat that as a student that transfers out of the university.

How do other universities handle such cases with respect to retention?
